Our Ethos and Values

Learning Through Discovery

At Hansfield ETSS, our ethos and values shape every aspect of school life. They guide how we teach and learn, how we make decisions and, most importantly, how we treat one another.

We are committed to creating a welcoming, inclusive and supportive school where every student is respected, encouraged and given the opportunity to reach their full potential. Our motto, Learning Through Discovery, reflects our belief that education should develop curiosity, confidence, independence and a lifelong love of learning.

Our Ethos

Hansfield ETSS is proud to be an Educate Together school. Our school is founded on four core principles.

Equality-based

Every student has equal access to our school and is treated with dignity and respect. No religion, belief or worldview is given priority over another.

We recognise and celebrate the diversity of our school community. Students are encouraged to learn about different beliefs, cultures, identities and perspectives in an atmosphere of openness and mutual respect.

Co-educational

Students learn together and are encouraged to explore their full range of interests, talents and abilities.

We provide equal opportunities for all students, regardless of gender or identity, and challenge stereotypes that may limit a young person’s choices, participation or ambitions.

Child-centred

Our students are at the heart of school life. Their learning, wellbeing, safety and development inform our policies, practices and decisions.

We recognise that every student is unique. We work to provide an educational experience that responds to individual strengths, interests and needs. Students are encouraged to express their views and to participate meaningfully in decisions that affect their school experience.

Democratically-run

We value the active participation of students, parents and guardians, staff and the wider community in the life of the school.

We encourage respectful dialogue, shared responsibility and constructive feedback, while recognising and positively affirming the professional role of teachers and school staff. Through collaboration and participation, we work together to continually strengthen our school.

Our School Values

Our six school values provide a shared foundation for our relationships, decisions and everyday actions.

Respect

We treat each other with kindness and consideration.

Respect means recognising the dignity and worth of every person. We listen to one another, value individual differences and take responsibility for how our words and actions affect others.

Inclusivity

We embrace diversity and ensure everyone feels valued and included.

We want every member of our school community to feel a genuine sense of belonging. We celebrate difference, remove barriers to participation and ensure that all students have opportunities to contribute, learn and succeed.

Honesty

We act with integrity and speak the truth.

Honesty builds trust. We encourage students and staff to communicate openly, take responsibility for their decisions and act fairly and consistently, even when doing so may be difficult.

Openness

We are open to new ideas, feedback and different perspectives.

Learning requires curiosity and a willingness to consider new possibilities. We encourage thoughtful discussion, respectful challenge and reflection. Feedback is welcomed as an opportunity to learn and improve.

Community

We support and care for each other, building a strong school community.

Our school is strengthened by the relationships between students, staff, families and the wider community. We look out for one another, celebrate achievements and provide support during times of difficulty.

Partnerships

We work together with others to achieve shared goals.

Education is most successful when students, staff, parents, guardians and community partners work together. Through positive partnerships, we share expertise, strengthen opportunities and support the learning and wellbeing of every student.

Our Values in Action

Our ethos and values are not simply statements displayed on a wall. They are reflected in how we:

  • welcome and include every member of our school community
  • support high-quality teaching and learning
  • promote student voice and participation
  • care for student and staff wellbeing
  • respond to challenges fairly and respectfully
  • celebrate diversity and individual achievement
  • build positive relationships with families and community organisations
  • prepare students to participate confidently and responsibly in society.

Every member of the Hansfield ETSS community has a role in bringing our values to life. Together, we aim to create a school in which people feel safe, respected, included and inspired to learn.

At Hansfield ETSS, we learn together, support one another and grow through discovery.
